A Time To Celebrate

As the “BCS National Championship” game is played tonight, I’m going to celebrate another championship. I’m going to celebrate the last non-BCS school to win a National Championship: The BYU Cougars. In today’s world there is no way a “non-BCS” school will ever win a National Championship. The system is designed to prevent this. That means there are 54 teams in the FBS who have no shot at winning a National Championship. Each year Duke has a better chance of making a BCS bowl game than all 54 of the non-BCS teams combined. Sure a non-BCS team can go to a BCS bowl game (e.g. Utah this year) but a non-BCS team will NEVER go to the National Championship game.

If this was 1984, Utah would be the National Champions of college football. Was the old system perfect? No, but at least it gave all teams a chance to win the title.

So tonight while I root on Florida (preference between the two), I will also raise a glass of soda to the BYU Cougars, the last non-BCS team to ever win a National Championship in college football.
